Episode 2: It’s Mouthguard Season! with Shane Chambers

Shane Chambers is a Townsville based dental prosthetist and oral health therapist (currently not practising in this field). Shane is an active participant in martial arts and currently owns a martial arts academy where the health and well being of his students of paramount importance.

Cathy and Shane Chambers discuss aspects of the design, manufacture and fit of custom mouthguards and which ones offer the give the best protection for individual needs. They explore their own experiences as athletes and coaches in different sporting pursuits (and ‘fess up to how a simple accident can have significant impacts!). Shane describes the differences found in the protection levels offered by simple store-bought models right through to the most sophisticated models required by the athletes requiring the highest level of protection. They discuss the difference a well-fitting mouthguard can make and Shane explains the enhanced on-field performance even young athletes experience, why mouthguards should be worn in training sessions as well as during game time, and what to look for so that your young athlete will be more likely to keep that mouthguard in place.

Shane explains the longterm impact of early tooth loss and oral injury from sporting trauma and how the financial and psycho/social impact can be significant. Shane’s experience and explanations will be invaluable for the listener as they prepare themselves or their family for the upcoming sporting season.
